Sara Shamma was born in Damascus, Syria in 1975. The Syrian civil war has since influenced her portraits and the way she looks at death and humanity. She mainly works from photographs or life, using oil paints. Shamma’s work represents the impact of grief and deep internal emotions around the theme of death and humanity.  Her work is further developed through looking at the refugee crisis and the psychological impacts of human trafficking as a result of the Syrian civil war.
